A band of interstellar deities travel across the galaxy, seeding planets with the chemicals needed for new life. The outer planet X-245-R-319 has a reputation of never being able to develop life, no matter how many times seeded. The dieities try many times, and are about to give up, when they accidentally discover a giant monster hiding on the planet that has been preventing life to take root all this time.
