Everyone in the star system is shocked when the planet Elsebin explodes and, in the rush to assign blame, calls for the apprehension and punishment of Blofboof, a comical monster that never harmed anyone, but has always eluded scientific examination. A mystic arrives and explains that science alone cannot explain the creature, and that Blofboof is not the guilty party, but the mystic is burned for his 'heresy'. As he dies, the mystic blames the people's loss of their sense of humour, which resulted in the planetary explosion, and that Blofboof exists to return humour to their lives.
