A shipwrecked soldier lives on a remote island with no company save a small reptillian creature he names Ode. He falls in love with the peaceful isolation of the island paradise and, before he dies, asks Ode to remember how important such peaceful solitude is for the soul, and to remember that no one is ever really alone when surrounded by nature's beauty. Decades later, the island is colonized and evolves into a seething metropolis. When the soldier's tiny monument is destroyed during the construction of a new state celebrating Excess, Ode returns as a giant monster to create havoc.
